Timeline

1 Week

This was a collaborative project created during Capython, in partnership with Welfare Avenue, a nonprofit organization that supports marginalized communities experiencing homelessness. The one-week intensive brought together 1st, 2nd, and 3rd-year students, who were given both a clear topic and a goal.

The goal was to empower communities while addressing the topic of building respect for diversity and removing barriers to racial and social equity.

Challenge

The challenge was to create a digital campaign that empowered the community to take action in support of racial and social equity. We aimed to raise awareness about systemic barriers affecting marginalized groups and inspire people to get involved—either by volunteering with Welfare Avenue or by making donations. Our campaign had to communicate urgency and empathy while maintaining clarity and accessibility across platforms.

Process

As a team, we conducted thorough research on systemic racism and how it intersects with housing, employment, and the criminal justice system. We analyzed existing campaigns and advocacy materials to understand how other organizations communicate similar issues. This helped us shape a message that felt honest, impactful, and accessible without being overwhelming or preachy.

We used Figma throughout the brainstorming phase to organize our research, create moodboards, and shape the visual direction of the campaign. For the posters, Myriam, Vicky, and I worked in a separate collaborative file. I developed the initial poster concepts, and together we decided on Concept 3: The Weight of the System—a visual metaphor showing the literal weight of systemic oppression pressing down on individuals. This idea became central to the tone and message of the campaign.

The collaboration with Welfare Avenue made the campaign especially meaningful. Knowing our designs could empower people to volunteer or donate added an extra layer of responsibility and motivation. Despite the time crunch and the challenges of working in a large team, we were able to pull together a cohesive and impactful project.
